HIIT training (high intensity interval training) is a form of training where we work as hard as we can for an allotted time, rest and start all over again. The goal is to increase our heart rate, let it recover and start all over again. It’s excellent exercise for our heart, our strength, our endurance. HIIT can be adjusted to different time intervals, different exercises, anything ranging from 10 to 30 minutes. One of my favorites is “Tabata”, which is traditionally a 4 minute block of time with intervals of 20 seconds on (exercising) and 10 seconds off (resting). HIIT enables us to pack a lot of cardio and/or strength into 30 minutes.
Is HIIT for everyone?
Not necessarily, but I find most people (of all fitness levels) enjoy the 4 minute block of time at the end of their session. Many download the app to their phones so they can complete a quick 4 minute “Tabata” at home. You’d be surprised how accomplished you feel after the 4 minutes! It’s an excellent way to add more variety to your workout and finish it up with a bang! If it still sounds a bit intimidating, don’t worry, I modify everything! And remember, this is YOUR workout! If you are not comfortable, we change it up!
