Hey there! I think sometimes people may be intimidated by the term “functional fitness”. Sounds like something super tough and grueling, doesn’t it? Well, rest assured it is not! Functional Fitness is a form of training that readies your body for your everyday activities. Squatting, twisting, turning, balancing, loading, pushing… all the types of movements you do in your normal day. Typically it includes a multi joint movement, encouraging our muscles to all work together as a team. Not only will you build strength, but you will also increase your range of motion as well as improving your balance. Sounds pretty cool huh?  Minute

Looking for examples of functional fitness exercises?

Probably the best functional exercise is… (drumroll inserted here) *Squats! Yep! How often do we squat down to pick something up? Using the bathroom? We can add an overhead reach with that – squat down, pick something up and put it away in the cabinet? Hmmm, maybe putting away groceries… I think you may be getting the idea.

And maybe, one of the most beneficial things is decreased risk of injury. The idea is to get all our muscles working together to keep you as healthy and injury free as possible!

Examples of everyday movement:

  • Groceries

  • Cleaning

  • Walking up and down steps

  • Pushing kids on a swing

  • Gardening

  • Walking dogs

  • Shoveling or mowing

  • Putting dishes away

Now these are only a few of many everyday activities, I’m sure you are probably adding to this list as you are reading.

*If squats scare you – no worries! There are always modifications!
